“Everyone loved your presentation & is excited to dive into your book!” That’s what the host of Kristen’s talk to Rancho Romero Elementary School parents said about her November mini-workshop, The Bullying Antidote: Raising An Upstander, Not A Bystander.  Ask Kristen about bringing this 45-minute presentation & conversation to your school!

Now here’s something fun: sign this petition to add “Upstanders” to the dictionary!

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser! We did not reach our lofty goal (donations are welcome ongoing at www.zorgosproject.org) but we raised the seed money for the essentials to kick off this project.

ZORGOS funny

Zorgos!

Over the next few weeks and months, as we begin to pass out books, we will continue to seek grants to provide facilitation & translation services; do outreach to schools, churches, and community groups (watch this space); and create the discussion guides.

Our core group (with the author) will be meeting Tuesdays starting January 5th at Oakland Parents Together. Join us!

p.s. you saw the movie… did you see the blooper reel?

Lemonade for Oakland

Louise explains why she is standing next to 5,600 lbs of books.

“As you know, my daughter and I wrote The Bullying Antidote: Superpower Your Kids for Life on request from the publisher. Kristen and I had great hopes that our book would help raise a more respectful, kinder generation by supporting parents! You can imagine our shock and disappointment when Hazelden notified us they would discontinue the book as of January 1, 2016. Apparently bullying is ‘no longer trending.’ But the problem is not solved, especially in our community.

“Kristen arranged for the remaining books to be donated to our Oakland community, in which she and her family have been deeply invested as teachers and parent organizers. (For the last two years, for example, she was president of the largest PTA in Oakland.)

“She discovered Oakland Parents Together, who hosts educational ‘Parent Cafes’ around the city. They were happy to receive the donation of the remaining books for our community.”

Today, 3000 books arrived!

“We need some help to pay shipping expenses. And materials to spread the word. Bringing parents together who will read the book and work to create positive change will create some magic. One reader recently wrote, ‘The Bullying Antidote is a wonderful resource—comprehensive and well-written, clear and informative. These are the items I will reference when I use it to teach my classes:

  • How to prevent/reduce victimization
  • How to address bullying
  • Ways to help bullies change their behavior.’

“Please watch Kristen’s video and read about ‘The Zorgos Project.‘ She is really turning our lemons into lemonade, to help our children thrive! But she can’t do it alone.

“If you could make a donation TODAY, it would show the world that there are people who care about educating parents in a city where bullying, poverty and crime intertwine. And if this project works in Oakland, it could work elsewhere. Even a $1 donation will make a huge difference to kids, and make the world a better place!”

Launching a Lecture

Kristen & Louise teachingCommunity Resources for Children brought us up to Napa on two Saturdays last November to speak to a wonderful audience of parents and caregivers on Bully Prevention through Positive Parenting.

The first lecture was delivered by Louise, with Kristen assisting, and covered the basics of positive parenting, including new strategies and ideas. One parent was astonished at our technique for eliminating whining and came back to report her success two weeks later. Continue reading

Join us on November 16th at 9am for Part Two of our workshop series about Bullying Prevention in Napa, California.

Kristen Caven will lead participants on a “tour” through the book, presenting their “unified field theory” of bullying, and providing participants with a clear understanding of how to build ZORGOS in their children and themselves.

The workshop will be held at Blue Oak School near downtown. Register at www.crcnapa.org.

Book signing TONIGHT 10/2 at 7p.m.

Local authors Dr. Louise Hart and Kristen Caven will be sharing FIVE INGREDIENTS of The Bullying Antidote at A Great Good Place for Books tonight.

Bestselling author Rick Hansen, who wrote The Buddha’s Brain, says it “provides parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to raise strong, resilient, assertive and emotionally healthy kids.” Jonathan Cohen, President of the National School Climate Center, highly recommends it. A recent trade reviewer said, “This is a well-written, understandable, and comprehensive book which your customers will be relieved to find on your shelves.” And one therapist wrote, “If you are looking for the definitive book on Bullying, you have found it. In fact, this book is so comprehensive, it covers societal factors, parenting styles, childhood development, self-esteem, emotional intelligence, brain science, best practices in schools, communication, and family dynamics, and all of the ways these factors contribute to the cause of—and then the solution to—bullying.”

It’s National Bullying Awareness Month, since this is the time kids are back to school and adapting to their new social scene.

If you know a parent anywhere who is struggling with bullying, be their child a bully or a target, please consider sending them the book this week. The authors are asking everyone they know to purchase a copy this weekend so their sales create a “blip” in the publishing world and their hopeful research can find its way into the hands of a wider range of parents.

The authors are also scheduling workshops and speaking engagements.

“Customers will be relieved to find on your shelves”

Tell your local bookstore about The Bullying Antidote! Here’s a review from Retailing Insight, a trade magazine:

Parents today are in competition with cultural trends in general, and advertising specifically, for the health and well-being of their children. One of the side effects has been an epidemic of bullying.

Whether your customers have children or not, they will have been affected in one or another by aggressive children without good boundaries. Any parent who has school-age children will have bullying at the top of their list of things to worry about. Louise Hart and Kristen Caven have tackled the problem head on, armed with cutting edge research and neuroscience.

This mother-daughter team believes that we are close to the tipping point when it comes to bullying, because the majority of parents have had enough and are ready to initiate a cultural change. This book will not only fuel that fire, it will give readers the information, insight, and specific tools they need to begin creating a better environment for all our children. By raising self-esteem, instilling assertive communication skills, and creating action for children to use when bullying occurs, parents can make their children more resilient and bully proof.

This is a well-written, understandable, and comprehensive book which many of your customers will be relieved to find on your shelves.
